Today January 6 marks three years since the attack on the United States Capitol Building. This attack is an attack on American democracy, and in commemoration of this day, "We are committed to keep the flame of democracy burning, we pledge to keep America alive." This is what the White House said in its tweet and tweeted the video of Joe Biden's voice message to the countrymen.

In this video, Biden is saying, “We are not bystanders in this ongoing attack on democracy. We are not powerless in the face of these threats. This is the nation that honours our constituition, we do not reject it. For a long time, we’ve told ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed, but it’s not. We have to defend it, we have to protect it, we have to stand up for it, each and every one of us.”

Some are calling for January 6 to be declared a federal holiday or democracy day.

What exactly happened on this day?

The then US President Donald Trump was defeated in the 2020 presidential election. Two months later on January 6, 2021, a mob of Donald Trump supporters attacked the United States Capitol Building in Washington DC.

At that time, these supporters demanded that Trump remain in power by preventing the joint session of Congress from counting the votes of the Electoral College. The result of the election remained unchanged. And this attack failed.

Five people died within 36 hours of the incident. One of them was shot dead by the Capitol Police. Another died due to drug overdose. Others died of other causes. 174 police officers were injured. Also, four officers committed suicide within seven months. During this incident, more than 2000 rioters entered the building. In which some parts of the building were vandalized and looted. Since this day in 2021, over 1200 rioters have been arrested. 900 people were charged and prosecuted.
